I think since last I logged on:
My son found a car and raised/saved enough money to pay for it at the same. On the day we finalized the arrangements for payment my mother called and chipped in $300 which covered the money he lost being unable to work while the University was on spring break, if he hadn't been without a car he could have worked at another location on call.
Her helping out was also something to note, she has typically never stepped in to help unless it made her feel heroic. This situation fits her egotistical nature but it still wasn't bad for a woman who has literally missed 21 out of 22 of his birthdays and Christmases.
------------
The issue with my husband and his back reached a fever pitch when he was finally approved for the surgery and then quoted a $2800 copay. Wha-fuq! That is an entire months income.
He got a release from the doctor to go back to work but on the day he went to file the paperwork his coworkers said they would not let him come back until he got surgery, they were even willing to loan him the money. The woman who works dispatch also knows of a study he can get into that will solve his other medical problem but that is another story.
He came home feeling very emotional and after a lot of discussion he got a small loan to cover surgery. His date is set for Tuesday, the poor guy can't have any aspirins, nsaids or anti-inflammitorys this week and he is suffering badly but at least relief is in sight.
We also got confirmation from the doctor that the Army misdiagnosed him with Ankylosing Spondylitis and the VA either misdiagnosed or flat out lied to him about depleting spinal fluid.
He herniated a disk and they did not tell him.
All this in addition to finding out that his Diabetes has also been a misdiagnosis and when they found out finally that he had a pseudocyst they decided not to treat it, preferring to continue an insulin therapy that was incorrect and not working. If I had not requested a VA dietician who then referred us to a VA pharmacist we would never have know.
The pharmacist got him on a medication that worked and then researched his medical history. She said that for 11 years they have simply opted to "watch him and see what happens", their actual notations.

I am disheartened. I don't know how else to describe it.
I can understand my family ignoring me and not even offering sympathy, because I chose to move 3000 miles away.
But ignoring my son too, when he humbles himself and beldly asks for help. It is so disappointing.

I finally had to panhandle online. I hate doing it but sometimes I have to ask for help.

It has been a hell of a week.
Week 2 of my husband's back injury started with a second opinion. We found out that the VA lied.
In the past he was diagnosed with a degenerativw spinal condition, they said his spinal fluid was depleting. This was a lie.
It was a herniated disk. They prepped him to some day be ready for paralysis. This was also a lie. He shows no signs at all of degeneration or arthritis on his scans, just a ruptured disk.
The doctor wanted to do surgery but the insurance won't pay. Can't afford more time off from work so he will probably go back this week.
We also found out that his diabetes is a lie. He is insulin dependant but it isn't diabetes or pancreatitis. It never was and it was treatable. They could have repaired it but chose not too, instead they opted to wait and watch while also mismanaging his insulin dosage. For 10 years.
